Water

Services

Water is indispensable for any society. Clean drinking water is a necessary condition to any form of life. However, these precious drops are under constant threat from drought, water scarcity, pollution, water losses and numerous other menaces. At the same time, water is a challenge to any city or nation which manifests itself in various forms such as increasing flooding or shortages in time and space, general lack of availability, deteriorated water quality, outdated networks, mismanagement and severe conflicts.

At NIRAS, we secure the water supply of the future when analysing water sectors, elaborating master plans, conceptualizing facilities, and investments, ensuring sustainable abstraction of water resources and fighting water losses and water scarcity with adaptable technologies and expertise.

Water runs in inseparable cycles and across borders. Our trademark holistic approach involves finding interdisciplinary solutions also in transboundary settings or fragile and conflict-affected situations through consultation and collaboration, risk management and a consistently high quality of project deliverables.

We help with all angles to future-proof utilities and systems for climate change, digitalisation and efficiency requirements: from structural planning and modelling, capacity evaluation and operations optimisation, conceptualisation, design, and invitations to tenders by promoting regenerative solutions, protecting vital ecosystems and working across disciplines.

Our team of experts comprises engineers, biologists, environmentalists, geologists, socio-economists, financial and institutional professionals, and climate change specialists.

Technical Assistance to the National Programme for Integrated Water Resources in Burkina Faso

FUNDER:

Danida

DURATION:

2021-2025

In a fragile and water scarce Sahelian environment, minimising and addressing the risks of climate change is largely about water. A functional legal, regulatory and institutional framework for managing water resources in an integrated manner constitutes a prerequisite to peacefully and equitably address the distribution of the scarce water resources. The Danish support to the implementation of the national Integrated Water Resources Management Plan is an important tool to ensure equitable distribution of water resources that has proven its value and will be continued. NIRAS is providing technical assistance to the national programme that focuses on strengthening the institutional framework and the mechanisms for preventing and resolving water-related conflicts. The Danish support has a clear focus on identifying climate change related to water with a view to enabling implementation of adaptive measures.

Non-Revenue Water Strategic Plan and Implementation Mechanisms

FUNDER:

The World Bank

DURATION:

2024-2026

The project Non-Revenue Water (NRW) Strategic Plan and Implementation Mechanisms & Business Plan Development for the water supply and sewerage authorities of six towns in Ethiopia seeks to address and overcome water supply challenges stemming from population growth, poor management and ineffective bill collection, resulting in a high level of water losses, dissatisfaction with sanitation services and potentially outdated sewer networks and facilities for wastewater treatment and sludge disposal. On behalf of Oromia Water and Energy Bureau, NIRAS will review and assess the physical infrastructure and the operation and maintenance systems in place and propose a NRW Reduction Strategy, Business and Investment Plans and tailor-made capacity-building measures in forms of seminars, coaching and on-the-job training.

Strengthening Climate Resilience Systems on Water Sanitation Hygiene (SCRS-WaSH)

FUNDER:

UK’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO)

DURATION:

2021-2026

The Strengthening Climate Resilience Systems on Water Sanitation Hygiene (SCRS-WaSH) Programme aims to improve access to climate-resilient water and improved sanitation services, in addition to good hygiene practices for 1.2 million people in the prioritised drought-affected and drought prone areas of Ethiopia.

NIRAS has successfully improved the long-term WASH sustainability across six regions and promoted gender equality by supporting the establishment of women and youth-led enterprises, and training 116 of their members in spare parts provision and operations management. These enterprises, predominantly led by women, now support local water supply schemes and utilities, contributing to community resilience amidst climate challenges. Moreover, the program has distributed reusable menstrual hygiene products to 29,000 girls in 150 rural schools, aiming to reduce school absenteeism and improve educational outcomes.

Community-led Accelerated Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (COWASH)

FUNDER:

Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) Finland

DURATION:

2021-2025

The long-standing Community-led Accelerated Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (COWASH) project has been driving rural WASH service delivery in Ethiopia through its innovative ‘Community Management Project’ approach, promoting community empowerment, transparency and ownership. Currently in phase 4, COWASH is being implemented in 105 districts (or woredas), representing more than 10% of all rural districts of Ethiopia. In addition to improved quality, functionality and monitoring of the rural water supply, there will be an increased focus on institutional WASH, water safety planning including climate resilience, safely managed sanitation including menstrual hygiene management, support and training of WASH Savings and Loan Associations, and mainstreaming inclusion.

Appraisal of Climate Resilient Eastern African Transboundary Water Management for Environmental Sustainability

FUNDER:

Danida

DURATION:

2024

NIRAS is supporting Danida’s Learning Department through an assignment to appraise the forthcoming Climate-Resilient Eastern African Transboundary Water Management for Environmental Sustainability (CREATES) project, which Danida is preparing. The objective is to strengthen capacities to adapt transboundary water management to climate change, i.e., to handle uncertainties and increasing threats to the availability and quality of water resources as well as promoting peace and stability through managing conflicts over water. CREATES will primarily be implemented by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the UNEP-DHI Centre on Water and Environment and will focus on: Sio-Malaba-Malakisi Basin: (SMM), shared by Uganda and Kenya, Mara Basin, shared by Kenya and Tanzania, Jubba-Shabelle Basin, shared by Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya and Lake Turkana, shared between Ethiopia and Kenya.

SADC Water Fund

FUNDER:

Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW)

DURATION:

2018-2026

Combining NIRAS’s strengths in fund management and transboundary water infrastructure, a team of in-house and external consultants is providing technical support to the Regional Fund for Water Supply Infrastructure and Basic Sanitation (RFWIBS), also known as the SADC Water Fund. The Fund aims to increase safe drinking water supply and coverage of improved and better sanitation services to SADC citizens. NIRAS is developing the Water Fund’s operational procedures, supporting project applicants and project owners, and promoting skills transfer to manage a diverse portfolio of complex water infrastructure projects.

Support to Preparatory Studies in Egypt under the EU Green Facility

FUNDER:

The European Union (EU)

DURATION:

2024-2026

NNIRAS is working with the Egyptian Ministry for Housing, Utilities & Urban Communities and the Ministry for Water Resources & Irrigation to conduct a pre-feasibility analysis and prepare technical studies in areas such as drainage systems, subsurface drainage network lifespan, optimal standards and controls for rehabilitation, and industrial wastewater reuse. This dual approach is aimed to support the EU Delegation and the Government of Egypt under the EU Green Facility, where our team will identify, develop, and carry out training and capacity building programmes in the water sector to improve organisation and performance and decentralise water management. An associated communication plan will be drawn up with the goal of involving users and stakeholders in the entire process. The goal is to lay the foundation for an integrated multi-sector investment project or programme that could potentially be funded by the EU, EIB, or other international financial institution.
